vintage 1950s Ray Ban WAYFARER sunglasses B&L gray plastic frames
Early Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses, circa late 1950s to early 1960s vintage.
Model 5024, unusual gray luminescent plastic with subtle patterning.
Lenses are a green / gray color and prescription, they will need to be professionally removed and swapped out.
These do not say "Ray Ban" on the temples, as more modern versions do; the silver tone metal details are at all four positions.
Also of note- the temples/ top of the arm pieces angle into the front sides of the frame - another early version detail on Wayfarers.
Wayfarers were first designed and produced in 1952, with G-15 lenses added in 1953.
Markings:
Both of the inner arms are marked "B&L RAY BAN".
The inner left nose pieces is etched "5024".
No other markings - no notation of USA or Wayfarer, hence being able to date these.
Condition:
The four metal details are tarnished and could use a light cleaning- again, by a professional at time of lens replacement.
The front right corner of the frames has a very, very shallow surface slit (I even hesitate to call it a crack) along the metal detail line. Quite minor and not terribly noticeable, but worth mentioning, see 2nd photo. Does not effect structure or strength of frame.
A bit of white paint? or something similar on the underside edge of the right frame- see 3rd photo. Again, a proper eye glasses shop will know the best way to clean this- the plastic or early acetate frames can react to chemicals so do leave to a professional.
Light overall signs of wear but no other issues- new lenses needed, otherwise ready to enjoy!
Any vintage frames may need slight adjustments to fit your face- this can be done by a skilled optician.
Measurements:
5- 5/8" (143 mm) across the front of the frame (hinge to hinge)
1- 13/16" (46 mm) frame height
arms are 5- 1/2" (140 mm) overall length from the hinge
